From Alexandria to the NYPD: Mariana Zakhary’s Egyptian-American Success Story

The Egyptian-American officer crowns a long journey of education, hard work, and professional excellence with her promotion to the rank of Captain in the New York City Police Department

ROAYAA NEWS – New York

In a story that began in Alexandria and reached one of the most prominent law enforcement institutions in the United States, Egyptian-American Mariana G. Zakhary has achieved a new milestone in her career following her promotion to the rank of Captain in the New York City Police Department (NYPD). According to published reports about her promotion, she has become the first Egyptian-American woman to attain the rank of Captain in the NYPD.

Before New York became the city where Mariana Zakhary built her professional career, Alexandria was where her story began. She was born there and spent the early years of her childhood in the Mediterranean city before moving with her family to the United States at a young age.

Mariana brought with her to New York many aspects of her Egyptian upbringing, and her Egyptian roots and identity have remained an important part of her life despite the many years she has spent in the United States. Raised in an Egyptian family, she maintained her Arabic language and connection to her culture and community while successfully integrating into American society.

Mariana arrived in the United States with her family as a child after spending her early years in Alexandria. Published sources indicate that she was around eleven years old when she moved to New York. She continued her education in the United States and eventually earned a Master’s degree in Political Science.

Throughout the years, Mariana has maintained strong ties with the Egyptian and Arab communities in New York. She has participated in numerous social, community, and religious events, combining pride in her Egyptian heritage with a deep connection to the American society in which she grew up, studied, and built her career.

From an early age, she developed a passion for reading, particularly subjects related to policing, crime, and criminal investigations. Before law enforcement became the main focus of her career, she also pursued an academic path, teaching at Brooklyn College and later having the opportunity to teach at the Police Academy. Her academic journey also took her to France, where she spent eight months on a fellowship program.

 18 Years with the NYPD

Mariana Zakhary began her service with the New York City Police Department in January 2008. Since then, she has served in a variety of assignments and units, including the 63rd and 68th Precincts, Brooklyn South Response Team, Promotional Training Unit, and Family Assistance Section, before joining Patrol Borough Manhattan South as a Captain in September 2026.

Her command of Arabic has been more than simply a connection to her Egyptian roots. It has also proven to be a valuable professional asset throughout her law enforcement and investigative career, helping her handle cases and situations requiring an understanding of both the Arabic language and Arab culture.

Her career also reflects a strong commitment to community service. Zakhary helped establish the Coptic American Law Enforcement Organization. According to the organization’s official website, she was the driving force behind its creation, serves as its president, and the initiative began in 2017.

A Message to the Next Generation

Through her appearances at community events, public forums, and in the media over the years, Mariana has consistently encouraged younger generations of Egyptian and Arab Americans to consider careers in law enforcement, while also highlighting the many civilian career opportunities available within the field.

She has remained active within New York’s Egyptian and Arab communities, participating in a variety of social and religious events that reflect both her Egyptian identity and her American professional journey.

Today, after nearly 18 years of service, her promotion to the rank of Captain represents a new chapter in a journey that began with a young girl arriving in New York from Alexandria. She continued her education, worked hard, passed the professional examinations required for advancement, and progressed step by step until reaching a leadership position within one of the largest police departments in the United States.

Mariana Zakhary’s journey is an Egyptian-American success story defined by education, determination, and ambition — and a message to younger generations that the road may begin far away, but achievement is built through years of hard work and perseverance.

ROAYAA NEWS congratulates Captain Mariana Zakhary on her promotion and wishes her continued success in her professional career and service to her community.
